FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS AND FOOD SECURITY
In 2024, a freak bird invasion completely destroyed 800 acres of AFRISWE Cooperative sorghum, stripping away the critical food supply and primary income source for 500 smallholder families. Despite facing this sudden devastation and massive financial ruin, the community remained resilient and deeply determined to completely rebuild.
Instead of surrendering, we listened. We studied nature. We adapted. We learned that by shifting production to Season B—when birds have abundant food in surrounding ecosystems—we could protect our crops. In 2025, we tested this strategy on 114 acres. The result? Lush fields. Heavy grain. A perfect harvest.
The AFRISWE Cooperative consists of 500 knowledgeable but financially limited smallholder farmers ready to scale. Rather than starting from scratch, they possess a functioning system, a secured market contract, and a proven production strategy. Their core challenge is building production capacity, not finding demand.
Sorghum offers reliable market demand, climate resilience, and versatile uses from food to industrial brewing. However, our smallholder farmers still face massive hurdles to growth. They remain constrained by limited capital, low mechanization, high post-harvest losses, and an inability to scale production effectively to meet that demand.
Hope has returned as farmers prepare to plant again, yet they face a critical standstill. Devastating financial losses wiped out all savings, leaving them without capital to move forward despite having land, knowledge, and organization. Without urgent intervention, they risk failing contractual obligations and falling back into poverty.
